Les Quatre Fleurs is a C18th farm workers’ complex with two cottages, a converted barn and a large garden area all surrounding a square courtyard, so that, although we are in the village, it is private and safe for young children (tested by our grandchildren!).  It is situated in the historic Gascony village of Galan, 10km north of Lannemezan and the Pyrenean auto-route, between Toulouse and Lourdes.
The Pyrenees and Spain are about an hour’s drive to the south.  The Mediterranean is three hours east and Biarritz, Bayonne and the Atlantic beaches two hours west down the motorway.

The Village
Galan has many more facilities than you would find in a similar small English town.  There is a bar, a tabac/newsagent which also sells bread and some foodstuffs, and a pharmacy (useful for mushroom advice!).  There is also a small food market on Sunday mornings.  The restaurant and boulangerie may be open; who knows – this is France! At the end of August there is the local fete with a small fair, a joint meal in the square and dancing to live music, culminating in a terrifying firework display. The nearest large town is
Lannemezan, which has 5 supermarkets, lots of shops and cafes, indoor / outdoor pool, leisure parks and a huge market on Wednesdays. There are also good markets in several local towns almost every day.

Things to do:
Half an hour away are many pleasant open-air pools and lakes where you can swim, pedalo and windsurf. There are also thermal spa-baths towards the mountains, which are a little expensive but very luxurious. In contrast, the mountain lakes are very refreshing and free!  There are local fetes and festivals almost every week throughout the summer, Marciac’s Jazz Festival August 1-15 being the most world famous.
Within an hour’s drive are many places of cultural and sporting interest, such as two huge prehistoric caves with paintings; several abbeys, castles & Roman sites; horse-riding, mountain biking & cycling; rivers with rafting & canoeing and mountains for walking, rock-climbing, parascending, canyoning, abseiling and skiing in winter.  The Pyrenees are a favourite holiday destination of the French, so tourists are well catered for, but they are never crowded.  The mountains themselves are part of both French and Spanish national parks and walks are usually clearly signed (on the French side!), well protected and quite spectacular.
Further afield, Toulouse, Carcassonne, Lourdes, Pau, Biarritz & Bayonne are all worth a day’s visit.

Getting there     Direct flights EasyJet Bristol to Toulouse (1½ hrs drive). Euro tunnel (11hrs drive).
Brittany Ferries to N France (10 hrs drive), Bilbao & Santander (3 & 4 hrs drive), or P & O to Bilbao.

Prices:
Cottages "Wisteria" and "Rose" £220 PER WEEK for 2 people + £30 for each additional adult or child.
The Barn is £450 PER WEEK for 4 people (not really suitable for babies & toddlers).
These prices include all services, bed linen & towels, but not swimming towels.
Special rates can be negotiated for the whole site, for family gatherings, retreats or courses, and for stays longer than two weeks.
